We lack an understanding of this behavioral phenomenon at both the proximate and distal levels of explanation, despite the ubiquitous usage of high-heeled footwear in both emerging and developed nations. The current manuscript proposes and examines a novel, evolutionarily based hypothesis for why women wear high heels and find convergent support for it using several methodologies. We hypothesized that high heels enhance women's attractiveness via effects on their lumbar curvature, based on a newly revealed evolved mate preference.

Women's lumbar curvature increased and they were seen as more attractive when they wore high heels, according to independent studies that used different methods, eliminated several confounds, and ruled out alternative hypotheses. A more in-depth examination discovered an even more accurate pattern that corresponded to human evolved psychology: Only when wearing heels changed their lumbar curvature to a more evolutionarily appropriate angle did high-heeled footwear boost women's attractiveness. These findings show how human evolved psychology can contribute to and overlap with aspects of cultural evolution, demonstrating that the two are not separate but intimately intertwined processes.
